What are veneers?

Veneers are like thin shells that attach to the front-facing surfaces of your teeth. Their sole purpose is to make your smile look more attractive. You can use a single veneer to cover a tooth that doesn’t fit in with the rest because of its shape, size, or damage.

Vida Dental makes custom veneers using impressions of your teeth. They use tooth-colored materials and select a shade based on the natural color of all of your other teeth. After they get the veneer from the manufacturing lab, they bond it to the front of the tooth in question using dental cement.

Before placing your veneer, your dentist removes a fine layer of enamel from the front surface of the tooth. Because your tooth needs its enamel for protection or at least a veneer to cover the exposed dentin, you’ll need to have a veneer on that particular tooth for the rest of its life.

When should I consider veneers?

Veneers can conceal many of your most prominent tooth flaws. Whether you don’t like how your tooth looks naturally or it has accumulated damage over the years, a veneer can make the cosmetic improvement you want. Your custom veneer from Vida Dental can cover  the following:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Small or short teeth
  • Teeth with wide gaps next to them
  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Misshapen or pointy teeth

Veneers work best for teeth that don’t withstand the full force of your bite, like canines or front teeth. If you have a molar you want to conceal, you’re probably better off getting a custom crown because it offers more support.

How long do my veneers last?

Most veneers can last for at least a decade if you properly care for them. While you’ll need a replacement for a veneer once it breaks or wears down, you can extend its lifespan by:

  • Avoiding chewing on hard objects, like ice cubes or popcorn seeds
  • Never use your teeth to tear through plastic or fabric
  • Using a mouthguard to prevent damage from teeth grinding
  • Brushing and flossing your teeth thoroughly every day
  • Visiting Vida Dental for cleanings and an exam every six months
  • Wearing a mouthguard while playing sports

You must keep your overall oral health intact because complications like cavities and gum disease can also affect your veneers.
